Steps to Adjust an Ergonomic Keyboard
- First, we recommend that you use your keyboard in the un-splayed and un-tented position for a few days to get used to the new key layout. The split between the right and left side of the keyboard can be challenging to get accustomed to. This is especially true if this is your first time using a split keyboard. By using the keyboard in this position for a few days, you’ll speed up the transition process.
- Once you’re comfortable with the key layout, it’s time to make an adjustment on the horizontal plane to straighten your wrists. The purpose of this adjustment is that you don’t want your wrists to bend inward or outward when your fingers are positioned on the home row of your keyboard. To make this horizontal adjustment, release the latch handle on the upper left hand corner of your keyboard. Now move the two segments of the keyboard until your wrists are straight, and your elbows are at a comfortable position by your side. When you’ve found your ideal position, push the latch handle back into the closed and locked position so your keyboard will maintain this shape.
- The final adjustment that you’ll want to make on your keyboard is vertical tenting. This will help release the tension and pressure in your hands, wrists, forearms, and shoulders. To find your ideal tenting position, hold your hands out in front of you with your palms facing toward the ground. Now slowly rotate your palms up until you feel a release in pressure through your hands, wrists, forearm, and shoulder. For the average person it is usually a 15-20 degree rotation. While holding your arms in this rotated position, bring your elbows back into a comfortable position by your side. The angle that your hands make is the angle that you’ll want to tent your Goldtouch keyboard to. To make this adjustment, release the latch handle on the top of the keyboard. Then, adjust the two segments of the keyboard to match your same hand tenting position. (Remember to maintain the horizontal adjustment that you already made).
Voila! You’ve found your ideal comfort typing position. Continue to fine tune your adjustments until you feel a sense of relaxation in your hands, wrists, arms, shoulders, and neck.
