An Introduction to Ergonomic Keyboards
So what exactly is an ergonomic keyboard? It’s a keyboard that is designed so that a user can be as productive as possible while still using the keyboard in a safe manner. This means that the keyboard allows the user to do their job, while mitigating the risk of suffering an injury while typing. The keyboards are designed for the user (instead of a user having to conform to the keyboard). It is because of this that many people turn to ergonomic keyboards when they are diagnosed with Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. Many users do in fact find relief from repetitive strain injuries by using an ergonomic keyboard.
Goldtouch is also aware that every person has a unique body structure and typing style. That’s why the best ergonomic keyboards on the market will allow the user to adjust the keyboard in a way that is most comfortable to them. In fact, Goldtouch keyboards are the world’s only fully adjustable, self-contained keyboards, meaning they are adjustable 0-30 degrees on the horizontal and vertical planes and require no extra pieces to be fully ergonomic.

Why do people use them?
Early adopters of the ergonomic keyboard started using these devices in order to relieve stress or improve an injury that originated from typing on a standard flat keyboard. These were people who typically had to type for hours at a time at work, and not typing was a solution they would not have been able to take. As these users shared their positive outcomes from the keyboards, more and more people who had pain (whether major or minor injuries) from typing decided to give it a try. They have become so prevalent that people now use ergonomic computer equipment not only to heal an injury, but to try and prevent an injury that may arise from using a keyboard.
Many companies have also kept an eye on the results of people who use ergonomic keyboards. In fact, a number of companies initiated full programs or pilot tests to learn about the company benefits of having employees use this style keyboard. The results of these programs have been great for the bottom line. For a more in depth look at how one company saved millions of dollars by switching to ergonomics, read this case study. Businesses have seen healthier and happier employees; an increase in productivity; and a savings in cost (for things like workers compensation). It’s no wonder there continues to be an increase in businesses showing interest in ergonomic computer accessories.
Who is using them right now?
People from all walks of life are using ergonomic keyboards. Yes, there are plenty of older folks who are currently benefitting by using one of these keyboards. And people who have just been diagnosed by a doctor with a Repetitive Strain Injury will often inquire on the types of products we have.
But there are segments that utilize the keyboards because they have already suffered an injury and are working to remedy the pain. There are also users who have taken a pre-emptive tactic to prevent a wrist injury and users that just generally love the comfort these keyboards provide. Tops among these are gamers and graphic designers (yes, there is a high demand with the under 40 crowd to use ergonomic keyboards). These are people who spend hours at a time at a computer, so being comfortable is very important. And with the right keyboard that is designed for them, they can be very efficient while staying pain-free.

What are the best ergonomic keyboards?
That’s a question we hear a lot. The best answer we can give is that the right ergonomic keyboard for you is the one that works for you and accommodates your needs. The one that you are comfortable typing on. The one that relieves pain or stops injuries from occurring. One that you can travel with, if needed. That’s one of the reasons why we don’t have just a single model keyboard, but a variety of them to choose from. And each is adjustable so that you can position it at your desk for optimal comfort and productivity.

Why should my company invest in ergonomic keyboards?
It is true that ergonomic keyboards can be more expensive than traditional flat keyboards (though not always). But a business that invests in ergonomic products for its employees is not just looking to buy basic keyboards. They are looking to build a workplace where their employees are healthier, happier and more productive.
Need proof? Take a look at these case studies that show how businesses are benefiting from being forward thinking when it comes to their employee’s health. They’ve seen a reduction in workers compensation costs with Repetitive Stress Injuries. Their employees who previously experienced RSI pain or discomfort are now seeing a reduction or elimination of that discomfort. These factors help lead to a reduction in lost work days and overall increase in productivity.
For large businesses that wish to standardize their office equipment with Goldtouch, contact us and inquire about our Pilot Program*. This program allows businesses to purchase an ergonomic keyboard, mouse, gel pad, laptop stand and monitor arm at a discount for a select group. The program includes a pre-Pilot program ROI calculator review, and support and training as part of the process. For all Pilot Program partners we offer support through video conferencing.
* It is important to note that eligibility for the Pilot Program is reviewed on a case-by-case basis and the number of pilot seats businesses are allowed is dependent on the size of the company and the commitment of their purchase.

How can an ergonomic keyboard help your business?
- The Occupational Safety and Health Administration estimates that employers pay $20 billion in workers’ compensation claims every year for RSI-related injuries.
- On average, for every 1 person who reports RSI-related pain, 15 people do not, letting their injuries worsen until they eventually need to get surgery or drop out of the workplace altogether.
- Goldtouch has saved dozens of companies millions of dollars (including one company that saved $14 million) just by employing Goldtouch ergonomic solutions throughout their organization.
Is it worth buying an ergonomic keyboard for myself?
If you have a type of Repetitive Stress Injury caused by typing all day on a keyboard, or feel any discomfort while using your current keyboard, then that’s your top reason to give it a try. Many users have seen improvement of their symptoms in as little as a few weeks. Best of all, with the pain gone they are able to be more productive, whether typing faster, taking less breaks or a combination of both.
But what if you don’t have any pain or discomfort while typing for hours at a time? What if you have used a flat keyboard your whole life – Why change now?
We truly hope this is the case in your situation. No one should be in pain because they type on a keyboard. If this happens to be you, ask yourself if you want to do all you can to keep it this way? Most RSI’s and discomfort from keyboards come from an accumulation of typing, not just from one particular session. You can reduce the risk of future pain from a repetitive strain injury by trying an ergonomic keyboard today.
How do I choose an ergonomic keyboard?
It is typically not hard for someone to find a Goldtouch keyboard they like. Some of the features that differentiate Goldtouch from the variety of ergonomic keyboards on the market are:
- Adjustability: A flat traditional keyboard has one position (or two if you count lifting up the legs underneath). The best ergonomic keyboards will have multiple positions to transition to. This will allow you to find the position that offers you the most comfort, with the option to change the position as needed throughout the day, the week or years.
- Bluetooth Wireless or USB Connect: As with most tech products these days, many keyboards will come with a Bluetooth wireless option. Think about how you use your keyboard and whether or not you can live without the wires.
- Tactile Feedback of Keys: The less pressure you have to exert for your computer to register a key stroke the better for your hands, wrists and forearms. Look for keyboards where the keys are not too tall, and can easily be depressed with a light touch. For a more in depth look at a traditional keyboard’s keystrokes vs. a Goldtouch keyboard’s keystrokes, click here.

Using an ergonomic keyboard is easy
Sure the benefits that an ergonomic keyboard can bring may make it seem like there’s a catch, but rest assured there is not. Set up and use of the keyboard is easy.
Set Up
Finding the best position to adjust your ergonomic keyboard to only takes a few moments. All you need to do is stick your fists out and in a slow, relaxed motion bring your elbows to your sides. Whatever angle your hands end up at is your correct angle. Match that angle up with your new keyboard and lock in place. You’re all set. Not sure what we mean? If you have 59 seconds please watch the below video on just how simple it is to get a new Goldtouch keyboard up and running.
Using The Keyboard
A common question we get is “How long until I get used to using an ergonomic keyboard?” The answer will vary from user to user. The layout of the letters, numbers and functions are primarily the same as a standard one, but some people are able to adapt to the change in hand positioning at a faster pace than others. We’ve seen users become proficient with their new keyboard in as little as a 3 days, while others are still feeling the keyboard out after a few weeks. Whatever amount of time it takes you to adjust, it should all be worth it in the end, with the increase in productivity and mitigation of injury.
There are no special shortcuts on Goldtouch keyboards, but they do offer the same functionality of common QWERTY keyboards. (see here for reference)
Troubleshooting
Due to the Bluetooth technology in use with the wireless keyboards, some users have run into issues while setting up or using them (interference issues or connection issues). There are quick solutions to these issues that get the products working most of the time. Details on those fixes can be seen here.
There is another problem that pops up for some Windows 10 users, regarding a ‘No passcode generated’ error. The common solution to that is here.
If you do happen to run into any issue while setting up or using a Goldtouch ergonomic keyboard, we do have a robust support center for you to use. It includes:
- FAQs
- User Guides

Rest assured that if you ever run into an issue with any of our products, we will do what we can to make it right.

Does it matter if I am right handed or left handed?
Absolutely not. Just like a flat keyboard, it does not matter which hand you are stronger with to use an ergonomic keyboard. Both righties and lefties have seen increases in production and decreases in injuries with the use of ergonomic keyboards.
Are there ergonomic keyboards for Macs?
Of course. Goldtouch currently has 4 different keyboards that will work with a Mac OS.
What operating systems are the keyboards compatible with?
That will depend on the model. In general, if the Goldtouch keyboard can be connected to a PC, it will be compatible with:
- Windows 2000
- Windows XP
- Windows Vista
- Windows 7
- Windows 8
- Windows 10
If the Goldtouch keyboard can be connected to a Mac, in general it will be compatible with:
- Mac OS 10.4, and newer
For specific compatibilities, please refer to each keyboards product page.
Does Goldtouch offer a TAA Compliant keyboard?
Yes we do. Our Goldtouch ErgoSecure 2.0 Smart Card Keyboard (GTS-0077) is TAA compliant. It offers a 2 factor authentication with a built-in Smart Card Reader and is great for government users.
Can I use the keyboard on more than one computer?
Yes you can. Let’s say you have an office computer and one you use at home. Just plug-and-play with a USB keyboard or connect the keyboard with Bluetooth Wireless. This way, you will be able to get the ergonomic experience wherever you type.
Do ergonomic keyboards have issues with them that you won’t find on traditional keyboards?
Not if used properly. They’ll withstand the normal wear and tear of a high volume keyboard user just as well.

Will an ergonomic keyboard be helpful if I still use a standard mouse?
Yes, but it depends on where the pain is originating from. It will depend on how often you use your mouse, and how well-fitted the mouse is to your body and computing style. If you are feeling pain in the wrist of the hand that uses a mouse, or if you just want to do all you can to prevent possible injury, we also carry ergonomic mice. As with the keyboards, there is quite a selection, so there is sure to be a style and size that will work best for you.
If you are looking to build the best computer workstation possible, there are quite a number of other elements that you may also want to keep in mind, such as:
- Lighting
- Chair
- Desk height
- Monitor height
- Physical surroundings, such as air circulation and noise
