Quick Overview: Understanding Bluetooth vs. Wireless Technology

Both Bluetooth and wireless devices remove cable clutter, but each technology works differently and offers unique advantages depending on your workflow. Knowing these differences helps you choose devices that offer better convenience, compatibility, and performance. Below are the core distinctions to keep in mind when comparing the two.

  • Built-In Bluetooth Support: Most modern laptops, tablets, and smartphones include Bluetooth by default, eliminating the need for USB dongles.
  • Proprietary Wireless Receivers: Many wireless devices rely on brand-specific USB dongles that occupy ports and must be replaced if lost.
  • Cross-Device Compatibility: Bluetooth pairs easily with multiple devices from different manufacturers, offering greater overall flexibility.
  • Comparable Connectivity Performance: Both Bluetooth and traditional wireless technologies operate on similar radio frequencies with reliable speed.
  • Multi-Device Pairing Options: Bluetooth keyboards and accessories can connect to several gadgets at once, enabling smoother multitasking.

Choosing the right technology ensures a cleaner setup, better device compatibility, and a more seamless everyday workflow.

Introduction to the Differences Between Bluetooth and Wireless Devices

Ah, wireless device technology. Is there anything better? No modern invention has done more to free our desktops and laptop bags of tangled wires and clutter. In fact, when it comes to reducing hassle, there’s only one thing that can top it: Bluetooth.

Cue record screeching to a halt.

Didn’t know that Bluetooth and Wireless aren’t necessarily the same thing? You’re not alone — it’s pretty confusing! After all, Bluetooth is a form of wireless technology, but not all wireless technology is Bluetooth. Plus the two technologies are close in name.

What About Bluetooth Wireless Technology?

Wireless Device

Many companies, Goldtouch included, use the term “Bluetooth wireless technology” to describe Bluetooth. However, there are a number of differences between the ways that they function, and it’s important to know what makes each one what it is. Let’s take a look at how to differentiate the two.

Round 1: Built-In

Here’s a scenario: You need a new keyboard so you head to the Goldtouch online store, browse our selection and decide that the Goldtouch Go!2 Wireless Bluetooth Mobile Keyboard is the perfect one for you. You add it to your shopping cart, checkout, and then wait anxiously for your wrist-saving keyboard to arrive. But low and behold, after finding the box on your doorstep, unpacking your keyboard and placing it in just the right area of our desk, you realize something terrible: you’ve forgotten to purchase a USB-wireless dongle adapter to plug into your computer because your computer doesn’t have integrated Bluetooth. Without its receiver, the keyboard is useless; you might as well be typing on stones.

But…

Thankfully, unlike most other wireless device technology, Bluetooth technology is built into most of today’s laptops, desktops, tablets and smartphones. That means all you have to do when you buy a Bluetooth-enabled device is pair it with your laptop or desktop and you’re ready to go. This makes Bluetooth extra-convenient, as you won’t have to remember to bring your dongle with you when you travel or work from the coffee shop. And for those of you who lose small things easily (so, most of us), you won’t ever have to replace a lost dongle, which can cost more than the device itself.

Perhaps best of all for those of us to whom limited USB-ports are precious (we’re looking at you, laptop users), Bluetooth doesn’t hog a port, meaning you’ll have more room for all of your other USB-reliant devices.

Round 2: Compatibility

As a rule, wireless receivers come with a proprietary device from a name brand manufacturer. That means they generally will only pair with that device or with others from the manufacturer. What’s more, when you lose a dongle, you often have to replace the entire device, since dongles are typically married solely to your single unit.  Bluetooth technology, on the other hand, plays nice with any Bluetooth-enabled device, regardless of who makes it or how it’s been paired. In that way, Bluetooth is much more widely compatible.

Round 3: Connectivity and Speed

Both Bluetooth and other wireless technology operate over radio frequency. Bluetooth operates specifically in the 2.4 to 2.8 GHz range, while other operators have a wider span. While the original Bluetooth devices occasionally experienced some interference and pickup problems within their range, newer devices no longer have this problem. There is really no difference between operating within the Bluetooth range and all others, as this is just what each has been assigned.

Round 4: Pairing Partners

You’ve probably deduced as much from what we’ve written so far, but Bluetooth devices are much more adept at pairing with a wider range of gadgets at once. Our Go!2 Wireless Bluetooth Mobile Keyboard, for instance, can be easily paired with your laptop and tablet as well as your PS2 or Smart TV. In fact, wherever there is a Bluetooth receiver, the Go!2 can be paired. How’s that for adaptability?
