Goldtouch V2In today’s “versus” showdown, we’re entering one of our own into the ring: the Goldtouch V2 Adjustable Comfort Keyboard. Not that we’re biased or anything, but we’re pretty sure our V2 will prove to be the “little keyboard that could” when we enter it into the ring with the Microsoft Sculpt, the successor to the Microsoft Natural Ergonomic Keyboard 4000. Why? Because ergonomic keyboards are what we do. But you don’t have to take our word for it. Let’s see what happens when we toss these two into the ring.

Round 1: Custom Fit

At first glance, the Microsoft Sculpt certainly looks ergonomic. In fact, with a curving, split design and a low profile to prevent wrist strain, it actually is ergonomic. But it’s only suitable for the small percentage of users whose typing style and physical makeup are an exact fit for those specifications. But for those of us who whose bodies and typing styles come in a wider range of shapes and sizes, the Goldtouch V2 clearly takes the day. Why?

The Goldtouch V2 Ergonomic Keyboard makes the best of its patented locking ball-joint, which enables users to pull apart both ends of the keyboard and in turn guides users into straightening their hands and wrists into the ideal position for them. A full 0 to 30˚ of tenting also means that users can find the correct vertical angle. This prevents users from straining their wrists and joints either too far upwards or downwards.

Altogether, these features ensure any user, no matter how they’re built, will avoid Repetitive Strain Injuries like Carpal Tunnel. That can only come from a keyboard that’s moveable. Something no static keyboard, no matter how supposedly ergonomically designed it is, can match (sorry, Microsoft Sculpt).

Round 2: Wrist Support

So, about wrist support. We touched on this a bit in the last round, but it’s important to look at on its own, given that it’s one of the Sculpt’s biggest selling points. Running along the bottom most edge of the keyboard, the Sculpt features an extensive palm support to provide respite for wrists both throughout and between typing sessions. And it’s nice — it’s really is. It’s just that it again creates a one-size-fits-no-one problem.

In fact, with the V2’s adjustability, most users won’t even need any kind of wrist support. Users will be able to find a vertical angle that doesn’t strain their wrists in the first place. For times when users want to rest their wrists near the keyboard without moving, Goldtouch offers gel wrist rests that provide much more feedback and gentler support. As a separate entity, users can opt for wrist support only when they need it. In fact, for many users whose hands and wrists don’t fit the Sculpt, the built-in wrist rest can actually be a hazard. This is because they can force the user’s hands to strain at a less than ideal angle. The Goldtouch V2 Adjustable Comfort Keyboard leaves this choice up to the user.

Round 3: Portability

V2 KeyboardThe Microsoft Sculpt is a desktop keyboard. Full stop, period, end of sentence — you get the picture. While the Goldtouch V2 isn’t a travel keyboard per se (for heavy travelers we recommend one of our lighter weight travel keyboards) that ball-joint is easily unlocked so that you can fold the keyboard in two and slip it into your laptop bag. Its compact nature also means that you can push it to the side of your desk to make more room for non-computer tasks whenever you have the need. In contrast, you could slip the Microsoft Sculpt into your laptop bag or slide it to the side of your desk. By all means, be our guest! But, it would be pretty awkward to carry and you wouldn’t be able to stack anything on top of it, as the keys would still be facing outwards.

Yeah, this one is no contest.
